People often ask,  “What is Pilates”
Sometimes I wish I had a quick and concise response, but I find myself considering the significance of Pilates and everything that it can teach people. The definition ends up getting lost in translation somehow and I am left listing off its benefits, which is just the tip of the iceberg.

Pilates is exercise, Pilates works your core, Pilates helps with flexibility, Pilates is movement therapy. The list goes on and on.
All of these things Pilates can do for you, but these are just some of the results compared to the long lasting effects of learning these techniques. At first it’s an exploration in learning about your own body and it’s responses. Often when we exercise we don’t think about what we are doing, how the muscles, nerves, fascia and bones all communicate with each other to make something happen. We take for granted our movement, until something is injured or we feel pain, then all of a sudden we are listening to our bodies. In that place of pain we are much more in tune and thoughtful. As time goes on we heel and then go back to our old ways.

Pilates is a tool to help you listen to your bodies to understand the mechanics, to truly integrate the mind and the body as one. It deepens your understanding of the structures and pathways that make up every movement. It helps you appreciate the nuances in even the simplest exercises.
If you have an iPhone or a computer device, normally we spend time learning how to use it effectively, we add apps, software and tools to help us communicate and be more organized or efficient. The body is our device and so many of us do not know how to use it. It’s the only body we have and when it breaks we can’t just go down to the Apple store and buy a new one. There isn’t a quick and inexpensive fix to a broken bone, a torn ligament or a strained muscle. Heeling takes time, therapy and sometimes surgery.

So why Pilates?

Pilates is the training that will teach you about your body and how it works, how to be effective, efficient and organised. These tools can be used in every aspect of your life. In the process you will build a stronger core, a more flexible spine and improve overall muscle tone and balance. So yes, it does of all that but the results are far more out reaching than you could ever imagine.

 Why Pilates while you’re pregnant?

Pregnancy is often associated with a number of musculo-skeletal problems. It is chiefly important to educate all mothers as well as those involved in ante- and postnatal care with advice on exercises that are safe in pregnancy (in particular pelvic floor exercises).
There is not much that can be done to modify the inevitable physiological and hormonal changes of pregnancy. However, by strengthening the core stabilising muscles around the pelvis and spine and improving scapular stability to prepare the mother for after delivery along with the breathing patterns, it is hoped that one can optimise the body for the challenges it may face.
Pilates is based on the principle that a central core is developed and then movements are introduced to challenge this core stability. This philosophy is clearly applicable in pregnancy, a challenge both mentally and physically on the mother’s body.
By maximising the mother’s core stability before and during pregnancy, it should be possible to limit any potential harm and stimulate the body safely. Returning to exercise soon after the birth is important for the mother’s physical and mental well being. She looks after her baby’s body for nine months, who cares for hers ?
