Pilates & Sciatica

What is sciatica?

Pilates & Sciatica. The term sciatica has commonly been used to describe a set of symptoms that may include pain traveling down the leg with possibly back pain, pins and needles and loss of limb power.
The term “sciatica” is however, misleading, unhelpful and arcane.

Why Are We Unique?

Top Pilates Instruction. We are a boutique studio offering Pilates Classes in Bayswater London, just minutes from the station.
Our instructors are fully certified STOTT Pilates. Unlike many other Pilates studios in the area which train their instructors in-house on a quickie weekend course, our instructors have achieved full certification from a worldwide education institution, taking months and sometimes years of training.

Our method incorporates  new information as research evolves in sports science and physical therapy, but also preserves the original exercises from the classical Pilates method. The results speak for themselves. The difference is profound. Many other studios in London offer boot camp style circuit classes that teach you a few mono-planal moves and time you on a stopwatch while you repetitively workout to sweat. Pilates is completely different. The difficulty comes from the complexity of the exercises, the concentration, coordination, body awareness, body control, precision, fluidity. Intelligent exercise.

Small Classes means that you get the attention you deserve. Most studios have 10 reformer beds. Our classes have 5 at most. They feel like semi private sessions.

Why Pilates for Hip Osteoarthritis?

Why Pilates for Hip Osteoarthritis?

Why Pilates for Hip Osteoarthritis?

Why Pilates for Hip Osteoarthritis?
Pilates can be very beneficial for you if you experience osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip. This is because Pilates a low-impact strengthening exercise that works on strengthening the stabilising muscles of your hip (adductors, abductors, hip flexors and extensors) in many functional positions. From a rehabilitation point, programming goals for hip OA will be to achieve segmental control of the hip and regional/global lumbo-pelvic region control. Expert Pilates exercise can help you achieve this by targeting the local and global stabilizers of the hip and lumbo-pelvic region.

Many people think of Pilates as a mat based exercise only, but the reformer, stability chair, Cadillac and barrels add many dimensions to this exercise.

Pilates exercises are fantastic to add gentle load the joint to build strength, and increase mobility even if the muscles around your joint are very weak initially. The equipment allows you to add traction to your hip join with the use of the reformer and the Cadillac. This can be extremely beneficial to increase joint space and fluid dynamics within the joint capsule.

If your goal is to try a conservative approach in order to avoid surgery, Pilates exercises may help your joints not only putting off surgical interventions, but to prepare and recover faster from them.

The cornerstone of Pilates exercise is to improve joint stability and increase joint mobility, therefore, your overall body joint health will greatly benefit from this form of exercise. E.g. knees, wrists, shoulders, spine.

Why Pilates for Hip Osteoarthritis?
Adequate joint motion and elasticity of periarticular tissues are necessary for cartilage nutrition and health, protection of joint structures from damaging impact loads, function, and comfort in daily activities. Pilates exercises may help with the above benefits.

Current recommendations of non-pharmacologic osteoarthritis therapy interventions include the following:

  • Patient education
  • Heat and cold
  • Weight loss
  • Exercise
  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Unloading in certain joints (eg, knee and hip)

Just minutes away from Holland Park, on Kensington Church street, our boutique studio is quaint, elegant and offers quality Pilates training. Our classes are very small, and feel like semi-private sessions. This way you get the attention you deserve.
We offer proper Pilates, not your circuit boot camp style classes that are ubiquitously offered in large popular studios. You will learn the Pilates method, rather than just timed interval training exercises.

Our contemporary method preserves the original exercises of the classical Pilates teachings, but incorporates new information and commonly accepted practices in sports science, kinesiology, physical therapy and it is anatomically based.

Our instructors are fully certified Pilates instructors who have actually gained their full Pilates certification through STOTT Pilates, a worldwide accreditation education. Unlike most studios that don’t have actual Pilates certified instructors, rather train in-house on quickie weekend courses that are only recognised by themselves.

We are qualified to instruct people with special needs, such as back pain, pre and post natal, older populations and more.

Try the difference. The results are profound.

What is Pilates

People often ask,  “What is Pilates”
Sometimes I wish I had a quick and concise response, but I find myself considering the significance of Pilates and everything that it can teach people. The definition ends up getting lost in translation somehow and I am left listing off its benefits, which is just the tip of the iceberg.

What is Pilates?

What is Pilates?

Pilates is exercise, Pilates works your core, Pilates helps with flexibility, Pilates is movement therapy. The list goes on and on.
All of these things Pilates can do for you, but these are just some of the results compared to the long lasting effects of learning these techniques. At first it’s an exploration in learning about your own body and it’s responses. Often when we exercise we don’t think about what we are doing, how the muscles, nerves, fascia and bones all communicate with each other to make something happen. We take for granted our movement, until something is injured or we feel pain, then all of a sudden we are listening to our bodies. In that place of pain we are much more in tune and thoughtful. As time goes on we heel and then go back to our old ways.

Pilates is a tool to help you listen to your bodies to understand the mechanics, to truly integrate the mind and the body as one. It deepens your understanding of the structures and pathways that make up every movement. It helps you appreciate the nuances in even the simplest exercises.
If you have an iPhone or a computer device, normally we spend time learning how to use it effectively, we add apps, software and tools to help us communicate and be more organized or efficient. The body is our device and so many of us do not know how to use it. It’s the only body we have and when it breaks we can’t just go down to the Apple store and buy a new one. There isn’t a quick and inexpensive fix to a broken bone, a torn ligament or a strained muscle. Heeling takes time, therapy and sometimes surgery.

So why Pilates?

Pilates is the training that will teach you about your body and how it works, how to be effective, efficient and organised. These tools can be used in every aspect of your life. In the process you will build a stronger core, a more flexible spine and improve overall muscle tone and balance. So yes, it does of all that but the results are far more out reaching than you could ever imagine.

Ante and Post Natal Pilates at Core Kensington

 Why Pilates while you’re pregnant?

Pregnancy is often associated with a number of musculo-skeletal problems. It is chiefly important to educate all mothers as well as those involved in ante- and postnatal care with advice on exercises that are safe in pregnancy (in particular pelvic floor exercises).
There is not much that can be done to modify the inevitable physiological and hormonal changes of pregnancy. However, by strengthening the core stabilising muscles around the pelvis and spine and improving scapular stability to prepare the mother for after delivery along with the breathing patterns, it is hoped that one can optimise the body for the challenges it may face.
Pilates is based on the principle that a central core is developed and then movements are introduced to challenge this core stability. This philosophy is clearly applicable in pregnancy, a challenge both mentally and physically on the mother’s body.
By maximising the mother’s core stability before and during pregnancy, it should be possible to limit any potential harm and stimulate the body safely. Returning to exercise soon after the birth is important for the mother’s physical and mental well being. She looks after her baby’s body for nine months, who cares for hers ?
At CORE KENSINGTON you can stay fit, strong and prepare yourself for delivery. A strong back and core goes a long way.
