WHAT IS PILATES?

Joseph Hubertus Pilates was the founder of the Pilates method of exercise. He named “contrology” his method of body conditioning, a complete coordination of body, mind and spirit (Pilates, Miller. 2000, p9). According to Mr Pilates every movement in Pilates requires complete body control by your mind. It shouldn’t be sudden, meaningless or haphazard. “It is only through Contrology that this unique trinity of a balanced body, mind and spirit can be ever attained ” (Pilates, Miller. 2000, p23). This is why Pilates is considered it a mind-body type of exercise.
His original method was based on the following principles: Breathing, Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision and Flow. Since its inception, these principles have been distilled from Mr. Pilates teachings and have set apart this form of exercise from the mainstream. These principles have formed the foundation of this unique mind-body form of exercise known as PILATES.

Although Mr Pilates was ahead of his time, he believed that the normal spine should be straight (Pilates 2000, p148)

Since his death, on 9 October 1967, new information in anatomy, exercise, sports medicine and physical therapy has become available. Along with this new information, more updated, contemporary approaches to Joseph Pilates’original method have also become widely available today.

The contemporary approach Intelligent exercise, Profound Results®

We are an independent studio using STOTT PILATES® equipment and methodology.

STOTT PILATES® incorporates modern exercise principles, and applies proven and accepted practices in bio mechanics, rehabilitation and athletic performance enhancement. After realising the benefits of the concepts of the original Pilates method, and in collaboration with a team of physical therapists/physiotherapists, sports medicine and exercise professionals, STOTT PILATES® co-founders Lindsay and Moira Merrithew, dissected and re-connected this unique form of exercise into a comprehensive, systematic, contemporary approach to the original teachings.

STOTT PILATES® exercises are designed to restore the natural curves of the spine and re balance the muscles around the joints. This involves placing more emphasis on pelvic and scapular stabilisation, and integration of all the parts of the body into one. As well, preparatory exercises and modifications allow the technique to be appropriate for many different body types and abilities, making it applicable to sport-specific training and everyday life.

The STOTT PILATES® Five basic principles

The following Five Basic Principles form the foundation of the method we use. Whether performed on a mat or on specialised equipment, application of the following bio mechanical principles will ensure the realisation of maximum benefits from Pilates exercises:
• Breathing
• Pelvic placement
• Rib cage placement
• Scapular movement
• Head & cervical spine placement
